Starter , curious question

My starter is almost forsure dead. While looking up rebuilt starters, I ran across an article about rebuilding your own.

They say you pretty much just take it apart and clean the internals with a wire brush. Then with very fine (1000grit I would guess or so) you sand lightly the oxidation off the 2 copper terminals. And the say you can replace the plunger, but you can clean it if your on a budget. Then rebuild and reinstall.

Has anyone tried this and if so did it work. Only asking because if it works, it would be great to save me cash after dumping $300+ with tax and all on O2 sensors, wrench for O2s, plugs, gaskets and stuff.

If you havent tried this or have and it didnt work or is kinda a risky move. Besides a junkyard...know any parts shops or online shops (Im in Houston) that sells rebuilds for say $50?
