Throttle-Dependent Shimmy / Strong Smell Of Gas After Accident...

SUP guys! Long time, no talk... ;)

Anyway - I recently got rear-ended in my '04 Tidal and have recently been seeing some performance issues as a result in addition to the cosmetic damage. The incident happened on the interstate in accident traffic, and while it was a good 25-30 mph smack which busted the other guy's radiator and pushed his passenger side bumper and fender up against his tire (needless to say, his had to be towed), I saw it coming and tried to pull off on the shoulder to avoid him (to no avail) and ended up with a nice point-of-impact crease all the way down the hatch and bumper just to the right of the keyhole.

Well as I was pulling back onto the interstate from the shoulder after the accident, I got up to about 50 mph and noticed a pretty good shimmy that shook the whole car (including myself) up to about 65 mph. I knew i had never felt it before, so immediately thought it was something suspension, alignment, or balance related and chalked it up to having it fixed at the shop with the rest of the repairs.

However, since then I've noticed a few other things, the first being that the shimmy is NOT related to speed, but rather, throttle... and it only does it when I get into the gas above 48-50 mph mark (thus why it first happened while I was accelerating to get back up to interstate speeds after the accident). Additionally, the past two times I've thrown some gas in ($15-$20 at almost empty... so not quite a half a tank) I've noticed a strong smell of gas in the cabin, which I can only assume at first guess is somehow related to the throttle issue (although it may not be).

So... any ideas? I know the charcoal box is very close to the bumper support, and I'm now wondering if my gas tank could have been damaged in the accident as well, but would either of those things present itself as a VERY noticeable throttle-dependent vibration at only highway speeds? I guess it's possible the tank got jarred hard enough to break the pump assembly seal under the rear seat, but I would think that would allow a gas smell in the cabin all the time.

Let's see who gets a cookie (and props from a veteran)... ;) LOL
