I've been looking into CAI mods online and really wanted to go the cheapest route. Reason being: I'm attempting to increase fuel economy, NOT WHP. CAIs kinda make me weary simply because of the lack of proper drainage in parking lots I frequent. The one at work has a steady 2" puddle the length of my car anytime it rains. I end up doing pizza deliveries often and since I'm usually in a hurry, I doubt that I'll have the time to dodge puddles in unknown areas. The lot in my apartment complex is better equipped with draining most of the time..usually just enough standing water to make my detail job look bad :P
With that said, I've opted for an SRI. It wasn't my first choice, but it's a compromise I'm willing to take. From what I've read on fuel economy threads, the difference in FE between an SRI and CAI is debatable, very little, or completely nonexistent.
Wanting the cheapest solution possible, eBay was undoubtedly my first stop :P
$40-60 for almost any CAI or SRI, but the filters are going to be less than par. And besides, the stock intake piping is 3" and the performance intake piping is also 3". It seems all I'm gaining is a shiny new pipe and a cool looking filter.
I went and looked at my engine bay for a little inspiration, and it dawned on me! Why couldn't I just slap on a K&N cone filter at the end of the MAF? It would be the same price as the eBay ones, with the quality of K&N.
Any thoughts on this?
