Well, I drove over to the local autocrossing events that are held at the Giant Center in Hershey, PA and recently held at the Farm Show lot for what they called a double event both Saturday and Sunday (a weekend of full autocrossing events). I know a few that are still autocrossing their cars from back in the 80's and using the same cars. The only difference is that they are running in the lowest grade of their class now. Autocrossing has changed a bit since I did it back then. Basically, all you see are Honda CRX, Miata, Subbies, Evo, Civics and SRT's and they all dominate the classes that they are in. Then you have the stragglers with whatever they have like BMW, Mustangs, Corvette, etc. Only on rare occasions did I ever see a Tiburon and I believe that they were running in the stock class, (H stock) I believe. So I inquire about autocrossing to one of the people I know and he starts looking at my Tib. Next thing I know, I have about 8 people around my car looking it over. Next thing, I get this "you have to run in SM class" because of all the mods and there is no way I can hide the cam lobing. there are some pretty fast cars in the Street Modified class and tires for that class are not cheap in any way. I read the rules and car entries for SM and for some reason it is not set up this way under the Susquehanna Region. Cars that are suppose to run in SS are running in SM and they have the SM divided into (2) groups, front wheel drive and rear wheel drive. Somehow, I feel that the Tiburon is doomed from any competition driving in autocross and will more or less be just for fun. I will have to see exactly how they have it set up for SM and why. Anyone else experience the same results in autocrossing events?
